How We Repair It (Three Methods, Honestly Compared)
Saw-cut remove and replace is the gold standard and our default: cut a clean rectangle back to sound pavement, excavate the failed base, rebuild it with compacted stone, tack the edges so new bonds to old, then hot mix in lifts, compacted flush. It costs the most of the three and it is the only one that fixes the cause.
Infrared patching reheats the existing asphalt in place until it is workable, blends in fresh mix, and re-compacts, producing a seamless thermally-bonded patch. Brilliant for surface defects, birdbaths and rough utility patches. Useless for base failure, you cannot heat your way out of a soft foundation, and we will say which category your damage is in.
Throw-and-roll cold patch is the bag from the hardware store, and we mean no disrespect, we keep some on the truck too. It is a tourniquet: fine for keeping a hole from growing until a proper repair, not a repair. If a contractor quotes cold patch as the permanent fix, keep dialing.
What Repairs Cost, and the Cost of Waiting
